"Superman The Movie" 30th Anniversary Post

The 30th anniversary of "Superman: The Movie" will be on December 15, 2008
And to celebrate the creation and existence of this timeless classic; which is not only one of the best superhero movies ever made (and it's really up there) but also one of the best movies ever made, and is one of my favorite films. Thanks to director Richard Donner, writer Mario Puzo, and actor Christopher Reeve, for making this piece of artwork truly immortal.

Rant: "Punisher: War Zone" & "Grindhouse"

"Punisher: War Zone" Rant

Ok, so, this movie doesn't really look good; it also looks pretty rough and gory (which, I'm sorry, but that kinda stuff I cant take).
But the part about this movie that's killing me is the name of the villain: "Jigsaw"... If you're a fan of the the "Saw" series (which I am NOT, for the record) the villain is "The Jigsaw Killer" or just "Jigsaw". Now, I know the Marvel Comics Jigsaw has been in the Universe before, and he is one of the Punisher's few recurring villains. But still, all I can think of when I hear is name is "Rip-Off"...

"Grindhouse" Rant

I saw like, 5 seconds of this movie on HBO, and within those few seconds, I saw how crappy that movie is. I know it was supposed to look lame and cheesy, but... it just looked, horrible...

"Quantum of Solace" Movie Review

Quantum of Solace Pictures, Images and Photos

"Quantum of Solace" (**)

The new James Bond film has been getting pretty mixed reviews, and I can't argue with those people on why they dislike it: (too much action, no Q the gadget guy, not once is "Bond, James Bond" EVER said, the classic 'gun barrel and blood on the screen from shot' opening is instead shown at the end), whatever it may be, I don't blame them.

Now, the question is : "Did I like it"... Well, allow me to first start by saying that I am (in no way, shape or form) a 007 fan (my family is), but I have never been one. I am more of a "Indiana Jones" and "Mission Impossible" person. But, perhaps that is the problem here: I am not a biased opinion, I have no knowledge to compare this Bond film, to any other. Now, before I'm misunderstood, I want to point out that it's not like I haven't seen any 007 flicks; I've seen bits & pieces of quite a few, perhaps decent chunks of a fair amount of them. But, if I where to start identifying them, I'd probably mix them up (for the record, this is the first Bond movie I've seen in theaters, and seen all the way through).

Ok, so now that I have explained where I am positioned in the field of James Bond, let me rap this up. I think it was a far action flick to see in this bland blanket of time we call "The Holiday Movie Season". But for a 007 fan-boy (or fan-man) to express that they are upset with this, I leave any and all right to say so with any authority to them. All I can say is (and perhaps people will agree with me here): the villain STUNK. He was the most boring Bond villain ever (that I have seen or HEARD of at least). Average, Normal, Regular; those words described the type of person he sounded and looked like. Nothing special about him: no eye-patch, no fake arm, no cool weapon, no scar. LAME (sorry to sound childish, but that is all I can say about him), not to bash the actor, but just the character. (if it counts for anything to anyone, he did have creepy big bug eyes...) Worth seeing... sorry I can't help you any further than what I've said.

"Sex Drive" Movie Review

Sex Drive Pictures, Images and Photos

"Sex Drive" (***) (Thumbs Up) (See It)

I guess that the movie-going public anymore, just can't get enough of the coming of age tales. I'm really starting to see the whole movies of a 'Teenage-Odyssey' all over again (I guess audiences really did miss the 1980's).

I don't have much to say, just that, this was a pretty funny and impressive movie. I highly enjoyed the characters, and events of "Sex Drive"; this to me, is a probable buy (at least a rent, but I'd honestly go toward owning it). Comparable to 2007's "Superbad"? I suppose (like I said, if you mean: "yet another journey of young people in order to find themselves, and along the way they discover unforgettable laughs and a colorful cast of characters and crazy events", then yes; but if you get into specific plot, then not really).

Something else I got out of this is, I think it's about time Seth Green was the main character in his own movie, he's too funny to keep up the ensemble / supporting gig forever.

Hope this helped... not allot to really comment or even quote, it's just better to actually just go ahead and see this one (completely fresh).

Get Out & Vote for Change.

Mel Gibson opts out of "Lethal Weapon 5"

Not much to really say about this; just that he simply didn't want to do it.

Guess he really is: "Too Old For This Sh**" (Yes, I know that's Glover's line, but still)

"Lethal Weapon 5" & "Men in Black III"

Like I said in my "Ghostbusters 3" announcement post, the new thing now is bringing back great movie-franchises (Superman, Indiana Jones, etc.)
The Script for "Lethal Weapon 5" has been handed from screen-writer Shane Black to movie-producer Joel Silver. And all thats really needed now is for Mel Gibson and Danny Glover to want to do it. It's also been said that Black may also direct (instead of Richard Donner who did the other four installments).

Also being talked about is the fair possibility of a third "Men in Black" movie, not to also leave out that Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith WANT to it.

I'm excited, now if only we can get a "Wayne's World 3" while we're at it... and I'm still a little sore that Brian Singer did not get the green light to make a "Superman Returns" sequel. Well, at least it did fill in the void that is "A Third Superman Movie Thats Good".

3 Franchises With Pointless Installments

These are three great movie series, that happen to have installments that arent as important as the others, in order to experience the whole series as great... I've listed below the movies that ARE TO BE watched, simply ignore the other ones...

1. Superman
("Superman", "Superman II", "Superman Returns") YES
("Superman III", "Superman IV", "Supergirl") NO, not good (at all)

2. Batman
("Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight") YES
(The others, just aren't as good... honestly)

3. Indiana Jones
("Raiders/Lost Ark", "Last Crusade", "-Crystal Skull") YES
("Temple of Doom") NO, not very good... alright... but, no.

"Ghostbusters 3" in 2010

Well, I know it's a little late to be commenting on this... but, "Ghostbusters III" was announced earlier this month! Yes, thats right! Columbia Pictures has signed the two writers from "The Office" (U.S. version) to script a third installment... Finally!
For a while, it was rumored that, if there was ever to be a 'part three', that it would be CGI, the impression so far is that that will no happen (*sighs of relief*). Apparently, it is going to feature the original / old Ghostbusters training newer & younger Ghostbusters. Judd Apatow ("40 Year Old Virgin", "Knocked Up") is producing it(being that his films are owned by Columbia); therefor, it is thought that he will provide cast members as the young Ghostbusters (perhaps Seth Rogan, maybe Steve Carrel, and hopefully some of the other company from "Superbad" and etc. I could definitely see Paul Rudd in it as well.). Also, I'm interested in seeing what Oscar's role will be (Dana's son from the second installment).
All I can say is, is that I'm excited, and I'm glad they're doing this... the style of movies in the 2000s so far is bringing back (and making sequels) to long-loved and long-gone franchises that still have some water left in the well: (Superman, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Rocky; "Superman Returns" & "Indiana Jones 4" were really important and significant to me).

Well, the word is, that its due out in 2010, and there will be no official deals until the script is done. So: cross your fingers and hope we get something great.

"Righteous Kill" & "Burn After Reading" review

"Righteous Kill" (???)
"Burn After Reading" (???)

September... probably the most confusing month for movies. Last year it was "Dragon Wars: D-WAR", perhaps the funniest & lamest movie that was meant to be taken seriously. This year: "Righteous Kill" and "Burn After Reading"...

"Righteous Kill" was the second movie to have Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro face-to-face in the same screen (first being "Heat" in 1995), and the third to just have the both of them in it at all (first being "The Godfather: Part II" in 1974). This movie was just... alright... honestly, the two of them just felt like making another movie together (whether or not the script was worthy enough to have the two in the film). These actors are two of the greatest ever, so, this film could've been better.

"Burn After Reading" was a Coen Brothers dark-comedy. Sure it was hilarious at multiple times, but in the end, it was just too d*mn dark. I know that was the point... but still.

These movies are good at parts, but there are other parts that are too disappointing, dark, and depressing (in certain scenes and segments). I mean, there are plenty of parts that redeem it was an enjoyable fim... but both movies have a bit or two that almost kill it. "Burn After Reading" was hilarious, but theres two specific scenes that could've been altered allot. The only way I can go into how I feel about these movies, are to include major spoilers, and I just don't feel like it (at least not for these movies) sorry.

OVER-ALL: "Burn After Reading" was funny (mostly) & better than "Righteous Kill" (... thats all I can say)

"The Departed" Movie Review

"The Departed" (****) (Thumbs Up) (See It, Own It)

Probably the greatest cast ever assembled for a motion picture, most likely one of the better crime-epics ever, and obviously one of the better movies this decade.

"The Departed" is a true modern mob movie will action, plot, and incredible wit, from director Martin Scorsese ("Good Fellas", "Casino", "Taxi Driver"). I cant name an actor in this movie that didn't give a great performance, and doesn't give a great performance for any of their other films; this movie's cast is made up of nothing but top-notch actors: Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello, Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan, Matt Damon as Colin Sullivan, and Mark Wahlberg as Sargent Dignam; even Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and Ray Winstone were excellent.

It even possesses perhaps one of the greatest soundtracks every created (consisting of: The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters, Jim Morrison, The Beach Boys, Dropkick Murphys). Almost everything about this movie is amazing and near-perfect. My only objection is that it could've had some other great actors that would've fit in just fine to add to the cast of gold (such as: Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt; they could be great additions to a crime movie, but perhaps that would've been too epic for a mobster-movie budget). Another thing that I would've wanted to be different would be the ending, and the conclusion to a certain character (so-to-speak).

But, none the less, this is a film that is a must see; and I completely understand why it won Best Picture.

OVER-ALL: Besides "Superman Returns", it's my favorite movie of 2006.

"Superman Returns" (late) Movie Review

"Superman Returns" (****) (Thumbs Up) (See It, Own It)

It seems that, the 'thing' for movies in the 2000's so-far, is to not 'remake', but continue popular and classic movies from a while ago. "Indiana Jones 4", "Die Hard 4", "Rambo 4", "Rocky Balboa", "Star Wars I-III"... But, if there was a movie, that was a sequel installment of a famous franchise, that was more significant compared to others of the same origin... it was "Superman Returns".

I can't tell you how much I loved this movie (being that the original "Superman: The Movie" with Christopher Reeve has been one of my favorite movies for a long time). And I was even a big fan of "Superman II"; sadly, "Superman III" & "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" just didn't 'do it' for not only me, but most of the movie-going public.

At one time to be "Superman V", then to be "Superman Reborn", then to have "Superman Lives" written by Kevin Smith ("Clerks"), directed by Tim Burton ("Batman"), and to star Nicolas Cage as The Man of Steel himself, "Superman Lives" was soon canceled (which was for the best, considering Burton wanted to completely make Superman... well... 'not like Superman' (enough said). And after that, J.J. Abrams' script for "Superman Flyby", was to be directed by Brett Ratner. Project-pitch after project-pitch kept repeatedly failing miserably; it seemed that another Superman installment was destined to be in h*ll forever (I don't want to go too much into it, but, better it be in h*ll, than become one of those projects... take it from me, they were horrible).

Finally, Bryan Singer ("X-Men", "X2") created the story, of "what if Superman had left earth, and had been gone for a long period of time (in the movie itself)" to match his absence in films in real life for the last many years (which I truly believe was pure genius and an intelligent plot). For Superman (Brandon Routh) to return to earth, and discover the love of his life Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth), to have had a child, and to have moved on with the rest of the world;---

"The world doesn't need a savior, and neither do I"

---Lois brutally and honestly tells him. Superman must redeem himself as the hero of mankind, and to soon discover and stop the revenge of Lex Luthor (played by Kevin Spacey, who did a great job; & perhaps the best Lex Luthor). And on June 28, 2006 (almost 20 years after the last film) Superman returned.

The story, style, and spirit of "Superman Returns" was to form the movie in not only a continuum to Richard Donner's 1978 original classic, but a true and deep ode and homage to it. The plot proved itself to be extremely impressive compared to many other superhero movies in recent years to not only myself, but to Jon Peters (producer), Richard Donner (director of the original), and Dana Reeve. To make the movie even more of a winner, it was rightfully dedicated to Christopher and Dana Reeve.

I think few feelings toward movies this decade, can measure up to the feeling of ultimate nostalgia, of when audiences experienced the return of the timeless Superman motion-picture credits... the theme, the neon blue letters, traveling throughout outer-space, it was ALL revived. But the mere credits weren't the only thing to bring back Superman as a film, it was without a doubt the ability to embody the emotion and life of Christopher Reeve, that Brandon Routh possessed. Kate Bosworth, did a fair job as Lois Lane (better than Katie Holmes in "Batman Begins"). James Marsden as Richard White, the believed and almost certain to be father of their son Jason (who adds much more to the storyline than is expected). And that they were able to digitally restore Marlon Brando as Jor-El finally completed the film, as a work of art. One of my favorite movies this decade, and without-a-doubt the 3rd best Superman movie ever made, if not the 2nd (not-to-forget that the airplane-rescue scene is the best action-sequence in all the franchise).

Anyone who loves Superman, superhero movies, and appreciates older movies, needs to see this film.

Rest in Peace Chris & Dana Reeve

"Indiana Jones 4" Movie Review (Extended)

"Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"
(****) (Thumbs Up) (See It, Own It)

Very few chances does someone get the privilege to see one of their childhood heroes in movie theaters, especially heroes of franchises that have been at rest for quite a while, & I have been given that privilege. I knew as soon as I heard that George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, & even Karen Allen were reuniting for "Indiana Jones: IV". And when I heard Cate Blanchet, & Shia LeBuff were going to be in it... I knew it was going to be near perfect. And ... it ... WAS!
This movie is by-far my favorite installment of the "Indiana Jones" series. The characters were great & enjoyable, the action scenes were amazing (concluding that the jungle-chase scene is without a doubt the most exciting action-sequence of all the Indy-installments), even the humor added nicely to it.
Finally being able to see Dr. Jones on the silver-screen (being that my only means of seeing his adventures for the first time was on VHS when I was very young). And the fact that they brought back his original love Marian (Allen) added a major plus to the movie. Shia Buff as Mutt is arguable his best sidekick (before anyone gets upset, Sean Connery as Indiana's father doesn't truly count as a "sidekick"), and as far as I'm concerned, Shia was better than 'Short-Round' (end of story).
The story also captivated me as well: being a HUGE fan of Indy 1 & 3 (obviously) and the setting of the evil Nazi enemies he endured and battled... it was still highly interesting to see them move-on to the Soviet threat of the 1950's (even if it was over-all mandatory to fast-forward in time in order to have Harrison's current age to blend in).
This was, thee most fun I have ever had at the movies in my entire life. A non-stop action-ride thats not too old for kids, & not too young for adults. Without a doubt one of the best movies this year, and one of the better movies of this decade (to me at least).
Like I said before: Very few times in a movie-fan's life, are they able to finally see one of their favorite motion-picture & action/adventure heroes not only return, and not only see them again (which is truly wonderful), but to finally see them for the first time in movie theaters... and this movie, gave me that privilege... and I will appreciate it for the rest of my life.

"Tropic Thunder" Movie Review (small-semi-spoiler)

"Tropic Thunder"
(***) (thumbs up!) (see it! own it!)

Again, Ben Stiller has proved that when he directs, its undoubtedly good & funny ("Zoolander", "The Cable Guy", "Reality Bites"). In fact, I like him much better for his movies that he's directed, than the movies he's only starred in (MUCH better).
"Tropic Thunder" isn't 1 of those lame comedies w/ random yet predictable jokes & puns: its everything about Hollywood that must be spoofed; including stars of redundant action-franchises w/ too many installments , rappers who somehow find their way into serious-movie deals , comedians of 2hr. fart-joke after fart-joke movies , and Australian actors in which everything they do turns to gold... (the last part I don't mind, because it is rightfully true, and I respect most if not all high-budget Australian actors & their work... but I do think a parody of them wouldn't hurt).
@ 1st, I thought for sure Robert Downey Jr. was going to steal the show w/ his role of the Oscar-Winning Australian actor who has surgery done to play the African-American Sgt. ... but, SURPRISE! ... it was Tom Cruise who stole the movie... yes, Cruise makes THEE-BEST Cameo in any movie (especially comedy) I have ever seen. I wont spoil WHO Tom Cruise is, and WHAT he does... but, it truly is the best of "Tropic Thunder".
The ONLY complaint I have for this, is that there were 1-too-many drug-abuse jokes involving Jack Black. But besides that, everyone did a great job in this movie. As for summer-comedies? -- this is mostly tied w/ "Pineapple Express". & NOTHING (comically) beats the 3 fake trailers in the beginning.

OVER-ALL: definitely the only comedy this summer that could be a runner up to "Pineapple Express", as 'Best Summer Comedy'.

"Pineapple Express" Movie Review

Pineapple Express Pictures, Images and Photos

"Pineapple Express"
(***) (thumbs up!) (see it! own it!)

This is 1 of thee best buddy-movies I have ever seen. In fact, its so close to being #1.. its tied... w/ "Superbad". Seth Rogan & Co. know how to make a true best-friend movie: By depicting, the best of times, the worst of times, & the most hilarious of times (which are both good & bad for the characters).

James Franco ('Harry Osborn' from the "Spider-Man" trilogy) hasn't really been known for comedy before (to tell you the truth, I don't think he's really known outside of "Spider-Man" 1-3... nothing against him though...) but he WILL BE now. Franco has created the most likable stoner w/ a heart of gold. Seth Rogan, never really putting alot of character into his... character... still manages to lighten-up the screen with his well-known taste of 1-liners & criticisms of other characters. Danny R. McBride as "Red" stole the movie. Very few comedies before have made my friends & I laugh so hard as the first scene when Franco introduces Rogan to McBride @ his house.
This movie is definitely a top runner in the all-time race of classic R-rated 1-liners. This is a comedy I would even consider seeing a 2nd time.
OVER-ALL: Go see this. You owe yourself the laughs.

"The Mummy 3" Movie Review

"The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor"
(**) (thumbs side ways) (see it, if you really want)

Now, before I went to see this... I didn't exactly have the best of hope for it; due to multiple reasons:
I.They had recast Rick's wife (plain & simple.. 'thats lame')
II. It wasnt the same director of the 1st 2 (LAME)
III. They got a new villain... ---

--- ...Now, the part w/ the villain for the 3rd-installment was tricky all-around.
It was a lose-lose fight, they were NEVER going to win. If they kept the original villain from the 1st 2 movies, people would've complained: "Ah! They just keep repeating the same plot & situation over-&-over-again! its the same thing!" ; when they did get a new villain, some people complained: "This is lame! I like the villain from the 1st 2". No matter what, people were gonna b--ch.
Those 3 reasons are why this movie was just not gonna be loved from the beginning.
I (personally) thought it was fair. Except, 1 thing bothered me... the CGI:
It was... I dont want to say "horrible".. but it wasn't as good as the 1st 2 (being weird that Pt. I came out in 1999, & Pt. II was in 2001.) you think they would've had enough money from the franchise to improve on the graphics & effects (not saying #1 & #2 had bad CGI, it was actually impressive, & still good today) But the special-effects actually got worse! I dont know how... but, o-well.
This film was a disappointment in many areas & departments. But it was still enjoyable & entertaining. But,over-all (as some fans, audiences & critics) are saying: " 'The Mummy: III' is slightly the 'poor-man's' 'Indiana Jones' ".

Give it a try, you may like it. Worth a buy? When its priced in the single digits... I'll think about it.

Next: Ill be reviewing "Pineapple Express" & Tropic Thunder"

July, 2008 Movie Reviews (*semi-spoilers*)

I) "Hancock"

1) PROS:
A) This had typical Will Smith humor (sadly, that didnt take it far).
B) The bank scene (his 1st scene as an actual hero) was pretty cool.
C) ... ... ...

2) CONS:
This movie started out good.. slow.. but good.
The 1st half was pretty cool & different..
& the 2nd half even started out being impressive (the bank scene).
But, w/ about 30 min. to go.. it started going down-hill...
Barely anything made sense, & it seemed like they started to make up stuff as
they went along (the writers)... NOTHING was hardly explained..
Now, you may ask: "whats there to explain? He Starts-out as a superhero..."
Well, the story waits till the last 25 min. to give you peices & bits of
their attempt of a half-@$$ed, mysterious origin.. but Theron only gives words such as: "we" , "they" , "where".. & thats about it.. out of 100%.. they have you 9% of any facts or clues. Plain-&-Simple: this movie f***ed-up.

OVER-ALL: (**) (thumbs down)

II) Hellboy II The Golden Army

1) PRO:
Well, this was a tricky movie for me (before I saw it)...
Like I said in the July-Previews, I'm not much of a Hellboy fan...
The 1st installment, was alright.. not really a movie of mine.
But my 1 friend, does like Hellboy alot, so, of course I would see it..
but, lets just say, I wasnt 100% looking forward to it..
So, I walk in, sit down, & think to myself: "Wow, I'll be lucky if I make it through this & get outta here"... BUT, I really liked it. It was WAY better than I thought it would be, pretty good. One of the biggest pleasant & unexpected surprises of 2008 blockbusters.

OVER-ALL: (***) (Thumbs Up)(See It)

III) Step Brothers

1) PROS:
Will Ferrel & John C. Riley are a great comedy team, & its good that we get 1 movie from them almost every year; but they really should make a little more.

2) CON:
Its a shame it was rated "R", cause there was ALOT of stuff in this movie that 13-15 year olds would've loved.

OVER-ALL: (**) (Thumbs Up) (See It)

The Dark Knight Movie Review (*semi*spoiler*)

Never before, have I experienced a more powerful & moving story on the silver screen. This IS thee best movie I have ever seen in movie theaters. This is a milestone in movies filled with legendary roles. I couldn’t have enjoyed this movie more.

It’s everything I thought & knew it was going to be, the movie to finally create an entire new feel of both superhero action & crime thrillers; it was so successful as a crime epic, that it did become that 1st, with “a superhero movie” being 2nd. Many people even regret it being noticed as a comic-book based film, so it could just be counted as a crime classic completely. Christopher Nolan has not only created perhaps the most amazing & remarkable sequels ever made (as not only a comic-book sequel, but as even just a sequel all-together) he has created the best film not only of this year, but just maybe this entire decade. By now, I shouldn’t have to say that this is the best Batman-film of the franchise, for 2 reasons: #1 being that its clearly obvious; & #2 being that it is somewhat insulting to compare it to Joel Schumacher’s Batman, & its still low to try to theoretically try to compare it to Tim Burton’s… but, for the record, I’ll just go ahead & say it is. Everyone I know wanted & wants to see it; & everyone I know who saw it, LOVED it, & rightfully so. Whether or not, you are: a superhero/comic-book fan, DC fan, or a Batman fan.. ANYONE who can say that they didn’t like this movie, is beyond my understanding.

Christopher Nolan, is perhaps the best rising director of this era, & one of thee greatest directors to adapt a comic-book / graphic novel to film (along with Zack Snyder, & Richard Donner). Mr. Nolan knows how to create feelings & emotions in a film that are truly deep and strong; to create a story that can dig into both our minds & hearts is his wonderful talent that I am grateful he uses for us.
Christian Bale, though over-looked sometimes, many do know & believe he is the greatest Batman. Balancing both the characteristics of Bruce Wayne and The Dark Knight to perfection while allowing us to visually experience the soul & spirit of Batman. I must express that Bale is not given the credit he deserves.
Aaron Eckhart, who has been over-looked as well was wonderful as a supporting protagonist may become; giving us a remarkable character of hope & justice, but to only break the hearts of the audience later with the extremely tragic outcome of who he becomes.
Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces Katie Holmes (which is really for the best, considering Homes’ role in “Batman Begins” was nothing more than mediocre) & she does a fair job @ it. Michael Cane, does a wonderful Alfred. Gary Oldman… he ALWAYS does a impressive job; he is not noticed by fans, audiences, and critics enough as well. Now, he does a great Com. Gordon… but for me to say that he is that “best”, isn’t a strong enough statement (against the other Gordons from past films.. it wasn’t a ‘hard race’). But non-the-less, Oldman delivers. Even the ensemble characters do a fantastic job (the old commissioner, Eric Roberts as ‘Sal “The Boss” Maroni’, Morgan Freeman) ALL did great.

Finally, the man who ‘stole the show’: Heath Andrew Ledger as the sick & twisted Joker. I could go on forever about Heath Ledger’s performance… but, everything I could possibly say has already been noted. Ledger not only became the best Joker, or the best comic-book villain, but the best screen villain I have ever seen in my entire life. He was the perfect antagonist. Everything he did was perfect. He portrayed a purely evil entity that was a complete force of chaos. I would like to state some other thoughts concerning him (especially in the end)… but that would create *major* spoilers; @ the end of this year, I may create a continuation of this review (for the DVD), considering that, by then, most will have seen it.

This film is nothing short of a “Best Picture” nomination, as well as Heath being “Best Supporting Actor”… perhaps “Best Actor”. This movie is legendary. & in it, we see such a gifted and talented actor we lost. His role was perhaps some of the best acting I have ever witnessed.

OVER-ALL:
(****) (Thumbs Up!) (See It!)

It’s a must see. & it is without-a-doubt a must own.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Ledger

Movie Previews for July 2008

I) Hancock

PRO: Will Smith always does a good job, even when the movie sucks

(IE: “The Wild Wild West” & “Hitch”). & he seems to have good chemistry with Jason Bateman. Plus, we’ve always seen a human & average Will Smith, we’ve never seen Will Smith with special abilities or powers. (Doesn’t matter, either way he’ll still kick someone’s @$$)

CON: @ 1st, when we saw trailer 1… it seemed like a feel-good comedy with some promising special effects and a decent fight scene perhaps (we didn’t really know much @ the time, & we didn’t really know what all to expect); enter: trailer 2. The first-half reintroduced us to the humor of trailer 1, then we see some … drama … um, ok…We see him struggling and having trouble (course, every superhero-movie has that), But something tells me there’s a clip or two we could’ve done without until the movie. Then, the TV Spots came out. For the past week or two (via TV & Youtube) we’ve been introduced with EVEN MORE drama. Wait-a-minute, I don’t understand, 1st this was a strict comedy, now it’s over-weighed with drama… a … “Dramedy”? Ok, ok, I can deal with drama in a movie I originally just wanted to be cool-funny… but they’re giving away chunks of a little something called THE PLOT. I won’t quote the TV Spots for the people that have stayed clear of them… but let’s just say that… my faith in this movie as dramatically (no pun) changed since trailer 2, not to mention they gave away a key line in the movie that probably takes place during a climax of some-sort. I was introduced to this movie thinking it’s not a typical, cliché, superhero-movie… now, we’re being given every impression that it is supposed to just that. Goes to show how much a movie can turn on you, in just the matter of weeks-to-days before it comes out.

OVER-ALL: … Now, I know once a movie is filmed its filmed and this is still the same movie that we saw trailer 1 to months ago, but this movie has ‘come-out’ in a sense of what its about more & more. Plain & simple… it appears this movie sold-out, it tried to be the anti-superhero-movie, now its trying to become just a super-hero movie. So, cross your figures & hope this isn’t too disappointing to what they’ve already blabbered-out.

II) Meet Dave

CON: WOW, um… where do I begin? Scratch that, there isn’t much to it; this movie looks HORRIBLE. It looks horrible, It sounds horrible, when I see a TV Spot something starts to stink off the TV so it even smells horrible! & it WILL be horrible. Eddie Murphy is down, and the referee is counting; this guy has been in a p!$$-poor slump for years. Luckily for him (& us more importantly) “Beverly Hills Cop: IV” has had a standing word out for 2009, this, I like.

OVER-ALL: DON’T SEE IT! (unless you are paid just as much money as it took to make the movie)

III) Hellboy II: The Golden Army

PRO: I like Ron Perlman as a Sci-Fi / Fantasy actor. The director (“Hellboy: I”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Blade: II”) seems like a cool guy. This will be a fair movie compared to some other movies during this year.

CON: If you want an outstanding praise like I give for the Superman and Batman movie franchises, I’m sorry but, you wont get it. Nothing toward the Hellboy crew, creators, movies, comics, or fans… but, this movie just isn’t, my thing. Now, I will see it, and enjoy it, but its not 1 of my key movie interests. #1 thing being (to me & some others) its just too ‘out-there’; now before I offend someone, & am NOT calling a fan of the Hellboy franchise a weirdo or freak, not @ all, & I don’t even think the movie is extremely odd, merely saying that, it’s a little ‘too much’ for me.

OVER-ALL: if you like it, you like it; if you don’t, don’t try to force yourself too. But you can bet your @$$ that the weekend of July 11th, Im seeing this over “Meet Dave” in a heart-beat (which isn’t saying much… but, I had to say it)

IV) Journey to the Center of the Earth

PRO: Brendan Fraser is in it. Good for a lot, perhaps most, & almost good enough for me. He’s a cool guy, & he pulls off the adventure-hero pretty well.

CON: It’s tricky; I don’t know what to say… I’m just … probably … not seeing it in theaters. It just doesn’t interest me enough.

OVER-ALL: Sorry Brendan, I’ll be seeing you in August for “The Mummy 3”.

V) The Dark Knight

PRO: “YEAH!!! IT’S ABOUT TIME!! FINALLY!” This is the movie mostly everyone has been waiting for; some waiting since last July with the release of the Teaser Trailer before The Simpsons Movie, with Trailer 2 in December before I Am Legend, some in May with Trailer 3 or with the recent TV Spots. But If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting not only @ the end credits to “Batman Begins” in 2005, but ALL YOUR LIFE for a Batman movie like this to be written for the screen & captured on film. Nolan’s vision for Batman is genius and amazing. Christian Bale, over-looked by some @ times, but never forgotten of being the 1 guy to bring Batman back after Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin” in 1997; and also becoming the best Batman ever. Maggie Gillynhal, replacing Katie Holmes (which is for the best, since shes a better actress). Aaron Eckhart as the Gotham DA Harvey Dent, who is obviously destined to become the dark vigilante (not necessarily a “villain” in some story-lines) Two-Face. And, of course, the late Heath Ledger as the pre-proclaimed best Joker ever on film.

CON: … you actually thought I was going to think of a CON ?

OVER-ALL: It’s the movie I’ve been waiting for, along with many. & We’ve waited long-enough. It will be the best Batman. & I’ll probably like it better than Indiana Jones 4. GO SEE IT, whether you’re a fan or not.

VI) Mamma Mia

I’m not even wasting my time. I’m not seeing this. PASS.

VII) Space Chimps

Yeah, this movie looks really dumb. I don’t care even if it has SNL’s Andy Sandberg. PASS.

VIII) Step Brothers

PRO: Will Ferrell & John C. Riley are great together in a movie. I don’t have much to say, just that, this looks funny & I am seeing it.

CON: Supposedly, Will Ferrell said there will be a Anchorman: 2… I’m not gonna say that THIS movie, shouldve been that… I love the concept of Step Brothers… but, Know of a Ron Burgundy Return dwarfs Step Brothers as far as both movies & Will Ferrell movies go.

OVER-ALL: See it. I will.

IX) The X-Files: I Want to Believe

A part 2… wow… Sorry to all X-Files fans, but, I’m not one.

PRO: It seems to follow the show and previous movie.

CON: ‘I Want To Believe’ that this is the last enrty of any sort in the X-Files franchise. & I WantED to believe that this was over so long ago.

OVER-ALL: Opening Weekend, I’m seeing “Step Brothers” … after that, no excuse; I’m just never seeing this.

See You @ the End of the Month.

Movie Reviews for June 2008

I) You Dont Mess With The Zohan
(*) (Thumbs side-ways)

1) PROS:
A) I was right, this has pretty much the same humor of ANY other Adam Sandler movie (but, only you will decide for yourself if that’s good or bad)
B) The Zohan, is probably the most unique & different Adam Sandler character (given he only plays the "goofy average guy who tries to be calm" or "the goofy dumb guy who screams a lot").
C) Dave Mathews as a red-neck villain, stole the show; the best character in the entire movie. Sadly he wasn’t in it enough.

2) CONS:
A) Adam Sandler is trying to gain a audience over homophobic-slurs, & it’s getting old.
B) This movie had a matter of four-repeated jokes. First being the Zohan's over-use of Humus (which he stole from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with the Windex). Second being the Israeli soda-pop (which wasn’t rally a "joke" I guess... but it kept appearing with them acting silly about it... whatever). Third being his big "bush". Fourth was him having sex with old ladies.
C) This movie tried to make its claim-to-fame with an over-use of cameos... which isn’t enough for a movie to be recognized, remembered, & funny.

OVER-ALL: see it once, good-enough.

II) Kung Fu Panda
(**) (Thumbs Up)

1) PROS:
A) Perfect character for Jack Black.
B) Better than Shrek (same Company). Better than a lot (if not most) Pixar movies.
C) Opening scene is the best scene.

2) CONS:
A) Jackie Chan did not have enough talking parts, I didn’t even know it was him until the credits.
B) Angelina Jolie's voice is not distinct enough to be recognized in an animated movie.
C) This movie could've used one more fight scene at least.

OVER-ALL: See it more than once. If you have kids, own it.

III) The Incredible Hulk
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Gold)

1) PROS:
A) Better than the 2003 HULK by-a-long-shot (Director, Actors, Writers, an actual Villain)
B) Better than a lot of other Marvel movies (Daredevil, Electra, Fantastic 4 (I&II).
C) Plot and sequences in it are better for a comic book movie; where as the 2003 one, tried to be too over-the-top intelligent and cerebral for a superhero movie.

2) CONS:
A) Not enough Hulk. Too much Bruce Banner.
B) TOO MANY Cheesy references to the Hulk's & the Abomination's name.
C) Tim Blake Nelson was VERY lame & cheesy.

OVER-ALL: Great movie to see in theaters. Perhaps a own. Definitely a rent.

IV) The Love Guru
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Silver)

1) PROS:
A) Exact humor from Austin Powers (which is GREAT)
B) Nice, cool, new character for Mike Myers, & he was good @ it.
C) Great cameos. Steven Colbert was the best cameo, & perhaps almost stole the movie.

2) CONS:
A) Sadly, the cameos are only at the very beginning & end. (we also could've used more).
B) Could've used a little more Ben Kingsley. & Justin Timberlake's parts are most already revealed (via Trailers & TV Spots)
C) More importantly (like I've said before), Mike Myers should've just done Austin Powers 4.

OVER-ALL: The next time I see Myers, I want it to be Austin Powers 4)

V) Get Smart
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Bronze)

1) PROS:
A) Steve Carrel's alright (as always)
B) Steve Carrel & Alan Arkin have great chemistry.
C) Bill Murry's cameo is the funniest part in the movie. (even if its too short, & only once)

2) CONS:
A) Too much was shown in the Trailers & TV Spots (so you can see a lot coming)
B) Patrick Warburton (Joe from Family Guy, and Putty from Seinfeld) wasn't in it enough, & he would've been perfect for this movie if he would've been in it more.
C) This movie could've used more comedians & characters in it.

OVER-ALL: Worth seeing again, someday.

BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH: The Incredible Hulk.

(I didn’t see The Happening; & I wont be seeing WALL.E or WANTED)

& A HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my sister Dana. See you this weekend.

Be Back in July

June Review Prologue "A Hulk 'Reboot'?"

PROLOGUE to June Reviews:

Before I return later this month

(between the June prequel & sequel)

… I would like to go over 1 thing…

“What exactly is a ‘REBOOT’”

(The Incredible Hulk movie is a REBOOT)…

Well, explained by itself, its hard to get sometimes...

But used with other movies, you should get it.

Definition Alone:

A (film / movie) REBOOT is a “re-start”, “re-do”, “do-over”.

More or less, “a 2nd shot” for a movie.

*Not* to be confused with the term “REMAKE”.

A remake is done when a movie is excellent and loved by many.

A reboot is done when a movie sucked and was loathed by most.

In Short:

A) Remake = We can still make this movie again just as good if not better!

Reboot = We’re sorry, heres a *better* movie (because we couldn’t do any *worse*).

B) Remake = a movie to make you remember w/ joy where it came from.

Reboot = a movie to make you forget w/ ease where it came from.

Compared To Other Movies ( IE: ):

A) Batman Begins (2005) was a reboot to erase Batman & Robin (1997).

B) Superman Returns (2006) is a SEQUEL – reboot to erase Superman III & IV.

C) & The Incredible Hulk is a reboot to erase HULK (2003)

Movie Previews for June 2008

I. You Don't Mess With the Zohan

1. PRO: pretty much looks like any humor of any other
Adam Sandler movie. So It wont disappoint (many)...

2. CON: “Israeli Anti-Terrorist Soldier who becomes a hair-stylist”...
Adam Sandler has now officially run out of ideas, I'm sorry.
(OVER-ALL: I'm not sure if I'm seeing this)

II. Kung Fu Panda

1. PRO: Its Jack Black (who I personally like better than Sandler)
who has been known to greatly appeal to both kids and adults.
So it'll have laughs with everyone (like BEE MOVIE).

2. CON: But to most (well, all*) who are reading this blog...
its still a kids-movie, (conclude what you wish with that)

III. The Incredible Hulk

1. PRO: a "RE-BOOT" (start-over / do-over ; IE: Batman Begins)
of the 2003 bore-fest. (enough said).

2. CON: ... um ... well ... actually:
theres nothing i DON'T like about this movie (so-far)
Better actors, writers, a fitting director. an ACTUAL super-villain.
The trailers and previews ALONE are better than the 2003 HULK.
+ It kinda looks better than Iron Man (to me).
(OVER-ALL: I'm seeing it; & you should too)

IV. Happening, The

1. PRO: Mark Wahlberg, M. Night Shyamalan...
...only reasons it will do OK.

2. CON: hardly anything is explained in the trailer...
... it just ... doesn't look ... good.

V. Get Smart

1. PRO: Steve Carrel... enough said.
only reason why Ill see it (along w/ others)
his presence is probably the only thing saving this movie.

2. CON: its a remake of a old TV show...
thats always a "wild card"
(OVER-ALL: "hit or miss")

VI. The Love Guru

1. PRO: Mike Myers = for-sure laughs.
Same humor as Austin Powers (good).

2. CON: if theres any I can think of...
he should have just done Austin Powers 4.

VII. WALL.E

1. PRO: ... kids like Pixar movies...

2. CON: ... I'm sorry for the brief PRO...
But this movie just really looks like a
odd & strange piece of $H!+...
(OVER-ALL: Dear Pixar,
can we just please have Toy Story 3 already?)

VIII. Wanted

1. PRO: It just plain & simple looks kick-@$$

2. CON: when this movie cought our attention...
it was "not yet rated"... only days ago @ MTV Movie Awards...
it was revealed it was "R"... So, every under-17 kid is SUPER
P!$$3D that they got some kick-@$$ trailers of a PG-13 *looking*
movie thats really "R".. I'll apologize to those kids now for
UNIVERSAL (they're having a rough time right now)
If it makes those kids feel any better, Wanted ripped-off
'bullet-time' (The Matrix Trilogy style of action)

(see you all @ the end of the month)

(WALL.E sucks)

Movie Reviews for May 2008.

Iron Man

(**) (THUMBS UP):

1. PROS: great action scenes; good effects; acting is exceptional; humor is fun and enjoyable. over-all a typical Marvel movie.

2. CONS: villain is introduced too late in the film (much too late), not enough action scenes; movie over-all is rushed.

Speed Racer

(**) (THUMBS UP):

1. PROS: great CGI; surprising acting; impressive & unexpected decent, and solid-story.

2. CONS: too many unnecessary things are CGI, but its more or less acceptable.

The Chronicals of Narnia: Prince Caspian

(**) (THUMBS UP):

1. PROS: almost better than the original (2005); great voice acting; Prince Caspian is a refreshing addition of a character in a fantasy movie.

2. CONS: villain is not sinister enough (the look, the sound, the background); when the threat of the White Witches return is presented, it only reminds us of how much of a evil villain she was, and that the present villain is lame.

Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

(****) (THUMBS UP):

1. Pros: Good story, great acting, wonderful music, awsome action, impressive effects. This was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time! (if not ever!)

(I didn’t see Sex & The City or What Happens in Vegas)
