Movie Reviews for June 2008

I) You Dont Mess With The Zohan
(*) (Thumbs side-ways)

1) PROS:
A) I was right, this has pretty much the same humor of ANY other Adam Sandler movie (but, only you will decide for yourself if that’s good or bad)
B) The Zohan, is probably the most unique & different Adam Sandler character (given he only plays the "goofy average guy who tries to be calm" or "the goofy dumb guy who screams a lot").
C) Dave Mathews as a red-neck villain, stole the show; the best character in the entire movie. Sadly he wasn’t in it enough.

2) CONS:
A) Adam Sandler is trying to gain a audience over homophobic-slurs, & it’s getting old.
B) This movie had a matter of four-repeated jokes. First being the Zohan's over-use of Humus (which he stole from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with the Windex). Second being the Israeli soda-pop (which wasn’t rally a "joke" I guess... but it kept appearing with them acting silly about it... whatever). Third being his big "bush". Fourth was him having sex with old ladies.
C) This movie tried to make its claim-to-fame with an over-use of cameos... which isn’t enough for a movie to be recognized, remembered, & funny.

OVER-ALL: see it once, good-enough.

II) Kung Fu Panda
(**) (Thumbs Up)

1) PROS:
A) Perfect character for Jack Black.
B) Better than Shrek (same Company). Better than a lot (if not most) Pixar movies.
C) Opening scene is the best scene.

2) CONS:
A) Jackie Chan did not have enough talking parts, I didn’t even know it was him until the credits.
B) Angelina Jolie's voice is not distinct enough to be recognized in an animated movie.
C) This movie could've used one more fight scene at least.

OVER-ALL: See it more than once. If you have kids, own it.

III) The Incredible Hulk
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Gold)

1) PROS:
A) Better than the 2003 HULK by-a-long-shot (Director, Actors, Writers, an actual Villain)
B) Better than a lot of other Marvel movies (Daredevil, Electra, Fantastic 4 (I&II).
C) Plot and sequences in it are better for a comic book movie; where as the 2003 one, tried to be too over-the-top intelligent and cerebral for a superhero movie.

2) CONS:
A) Not enough Hulk. Too much Bruce Banner.
B) TOO MANY Cheesy references to the Hulk's & the Abomination's name.
C) Tim Blake Nelson was VERY lame & cheesy.

OVER-ALL: Great movie to see in theaters. Perhaps a own. Definitely a rent.

IV) The Love Guru
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Silver)

1) PROS:
A) Exact humor from Austin Powers (which is GREAT)
B) Nice, cool, new character for Mike Myers, & he was good @ it.
C) Great cameos. Steven Colbert was the best cameo, & perhaps almost stole the movie.

2) CONS:
A) Sadly, the cameos are only at the very beginning & end. (we also could've used more).
B) Could've used a little more Ben Kingsley. & Justin Timberlake's parts are most already revealed (via Trailers & TV Spots)
C) More importantly (like I've said before), Mike Myers should've just done Austin Powers 4.

OVER-ALL: The next time I see Myers, I want it to be Austin Powers 4)

V) Get Smart
(**) (Thumbs Up) (Bronze)

1) PROS:
A) Steve Carrel's alright (as always)
B) Steve Carrel & Alan Arkin have great chemistry.
C) Bill Murry's cameo is the funniest part in the movie. (even if its too short, & only once)

2) CONS:
A) Too much was shown in the Trailers & TV Spots (so you can see a lot coming)
B) Patrick Warburton (Joe from Family Guy, and Putty from Seinfeld) wasn't in it enough, & he would've been perfect for this movie if he would've been in it more.
C) This movie could've used more comedians & characters in it.

OVER-ALL: Worth seeing again, someday.

BEST MOVIE OF THE MONTH: The Incredible Hulk.

(I didn’t see The Happening; & I wont be seeing WALL.E or WANTED)

June Review Prologue "A Hulk 'Reboot'?"

PROLOGUE to June Reviews:

Before I return later this month

(between the June prequel & sequel)

… I would like to go over 1 thing…

“What exactly is a ‘REBOOT’”

(The Incredible Hulk movie is a REBOOT)…

Well, explained by itself, its hard to get sometimes...

But used with other movies, you should get it.

Definition Alone:

A (film / movie) REBOOT is a “re-start”, “re-do”, “do-over”.

More or less, “a 2nd shot” for a movie.

*Not* to be confused with the term “REMAKE”.

A remake is done when a movie is excellent and loved by many.

A reboot is done when a movie sucked and was loathed by most.

In Short:

A) Remake = We can still make this movie again just as good if not better!

Reboot = We’re sorry, heres a *better* movie (because we couldn’t do any *worse*).

B) Remake = a movie to make you remember w/ joy where it came from.

Reboot = a movie to make you forget w/ ease where it came from.

Compared To Other Movies ( IE: ):

A) Batman Begins (2005) was a reboot to erase Batman & Robin (1997).

B) Superman Returns (2006) is a SEQUEL – reboot to erase Superman III & IV.

C) & The Incredible Hulk is a reboot to erase HULK (2003)

Movie Previews for June 2008

I. You Don't Mess With the Zohan

1. PRO: pretty much looks like any humor of any other
Adam Sandler movie. So It wont disappoint (many)...

2. CON: “Israeli Anti-Terrorist Soldier who becomes a hair-stylist”...
Adam Sandler has now officially run out of ideas, I'm sorry.
(OVER-ALL: I'm not sure if I'm seeing this)

II. Kung Fu Panda

1. PRO: Its Jack Black (who I personally like better than Sandler)
who has been known to greatly appeal to both kids and adults.
So it'll have laughs with everyone (like BEE MOVIE).

2. CON: But to most (well, all*) who are reading this blog...
its still a kids-movie, (conclude what you wish with that)

III. The Incredible Hulk

1. PRO: a "RE-BOOT" (start-over / do-over ; IE: Batman Begins)
of the 2003 bore-fest. (enough said).

2. CON: ... um ... well ... actually:
theres nothing i DON'T like about this movie (so-far)
Better actors, writers, a fitting director. an ACTUAL super-villain.
The trailers and previews ALONE are better than the 2003 HULK.
+ It kinda looks better than Iron Man (to me).
(OVER-ALL: I'm seeing it; & you should too)

IV. Happening, The

1. PRO: Mark Wahlberg, M. Night Shyamalan...
...only reasons it will do OK.

2. CON: hardly anything is explained in the trailer...
... it just ... doesn't look ... good.

V. Get Smart

1. PRO: Steve Carrel... enough said.
only reason why Ill see it (along w/ others)
his presence is probably the only thing saving this movie.

2. CON: its a remake of a old TV show...
thats always a "wild card"
(OVER-ALL: "hit or miss")

VI. The Love Guru

1. PRO: Mike Myers = for-sure laughs.
Same humor as Austin Powers (good).

2. CON: if theres any I can think of...
he should have just done Austin Powers 4.

VII. WALL.E

1. PRO: ... kids like Pixar movies...

2. CON: ... I'm sorry for the brief PRO...
But this movie just really looks like a
odd & strange piece of $H!+...
(OVER-ALL: Dear Pixar,
can we just please have Toy Story 3 already?)

VIII. Wanted

1. PRO: It just plain & simple looks kick-@$$

2. CON: when this movie cought our attention...
it was "not yet rated"... only days ago @ MTV Movie Awards...
it was revealed it was "R"... So, every under-17 kid is SUPER
P!$$3D that they got some kick-@$$ trailers of a PG-13 *looking*
movie thats really "R".. I'll apologize to those kids now for
UNIVERSAL (they're having a rough time right now)
If it makes those kids feel any better, Wanted ripped-off
'bullet-time' (The Matrix Trilogy style of action)

(see you all @ the end of the month)

(WALL.E sucks)
